The joy of music. Pink Floyd's "Echos," Wille Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," Mark Knopfler ballads, and Mahler symphonies—all stir wonder in my soul.
I offer guitar lessons because I love music and enjoy the people who appreciate music.
I have been a Lakeshore native for 25+ years. Over my life, I have played and studied music for over 20 years. I played trumpet and guitar in my youth and took classical piano lessons in my 30s. I resumed playing guitar again just five years ago and have been studying and playing intensely during that time. With this activity, I have developed a keen interest in the learning process of learning the guitar, and I have a unique understanding of what works when trying to develop the skills of playing the guitar. I continuously learn and take lessons from different teachers to broaden my knowledge.
I specialize in beginner, novice, and intermediate students.
I teach those who want to play: current pop, rock, country, jazz, folk, and standards — and also beginning lessons for classical guitar.
I teach playing guitar with a pick and fingerstyle (fingerpicking) to ages 10-100.
I offer a dedicated music studio adjacent to the entrance of my modern home and a comfortable waiting area.
Of course, it will be fun. And it's not about me teaching; it's about you learning. Different people learn in different ways. I learned this in my years as a part-time ski instructor. It's up to me to discover how you learn. Also, we will apply lessons to the music genre(s) that you are interested in — not a one size fits all approach.
Good technique from the beginning is essential. This is why "in-person" lessons are a must. Online lessons do not work for learning technique or discovering and quickly eliminating bad habits. Months and years of practice can be saved if bad habits never start or are quickly discovered and corrected.
How to "practice smart" and not waste time (weeks, months, and years) by practicing ineffectively—might be the most essential thing I understand and teach.
Serious students and young students will learn music theory as they progress.
Music theory is actually "music understanding". Music theory is fascinating and dramatically facilitates learning the guitar and a deeper understanding of the instrument. With an understanding of music, the guitar's fingerboard is no longer a random matrix of "buttons" to push. The fingerboard begins to make sense. This deeper connection and understanding leads to the joy of being a true "musician" (whether novice or expert) and also opens up the world of improvising—creating your music.
All young students will want to learn to read music from the beginning. Casual adult hobbyists can get by with the basics of reading music if they insist on not spending the time.
From an early stage in your learning journey, you will begin to learn elements to improvise music. This is so much fun.
Let me guide you as you embark on your musical journey. Let's get started.
